| Dear Fr.Varghese and all my friends at Santhwana, One year has rushed by so fast and the certificate in “Basic Training in Counselling” is in our hands! I remember that it was a casual suggestion from Mr.A.S.Shenoy of KCF, that prompted me to join for this course and first of all I must thank him for his advice. I would like to tell you something about my educational background. I started my schooling in a very ordinary Government L.P.S in Calicut with very limited facilities. Then moved on to St. Joseph's Boys H.S, Malabar Christian College and then I.I.T Madras. At I.I.T, we were privileged to have the best of faculty, facilities and teaching and evaluation systems matching international standards. Afterwards, I acquired additional qualifications attending evening classes at St. Albert's College, Ernakulam. As time went by, I had the chance to work as counsellor for the MBA program of IGNOU, which works on the distance education model. Also, I have handled classes as guest faculty at Kuttukaran Institute of Management and Kerala State Productivity Council. One could say that I have a fair exposure to a broad spectrum of educational systems and standards. Now, I would like to state here that my learning experience at Santhwana has been very special, unique and un-paralleled. No comparison with whatever else I had experienced before! Fr.Varghese has perfected a system involving all the participants in group discussions, sharing experiences, role play, group dynamics and extra-curricular activities encouraging everyone to hone up their innate talents. While the class is divided into four permanent houses, random groups are created every day for discussing the topics of the day. This ensures interaction between all the participants and improves interpersonal skills. One must appreciate that it is not easy to teach a class of students with heterogeneous backgrounds, different age groups and professions. It is amazing how we have learned an array of topics like anxiety and depression, TA, kleptomania, personality types, brain and emotions, paranoia, counselling skills, learning disabilities, anger management, stress management, time management, assertiveness, hysteria, insomnia, reflexology, communication skills and much more, without writing a single written exam or viva-voce! Onam and Christmas Celebrations and even a boat-ride are so carefully planned and integrated into the course helping personality development. I sincerely request Fr.Varghese to document his system of teaching and popularise it through educational journals and the media so that the benefit of this system evolved by him will reach out to the entire world. I take this opportunity to sincerely thank Fr. Varghese Pudussery and all other faculty members including Dr.Alex Mathew, Dr.Kuruvilla Thomas, Ms.Lincy Joseph, Prof.V.J.Antony, Prof. Narayana Kaimal for making the course so very useful and equally enjoyable. Also special thanks are due to Babychan who greets everyone with a winning smile and provides administrative support calmly and efficiently. Last but not the least, my thanks are due to all my wonderful classmates for the support and companionship I could enjoy throughout. All our friends in the class had special qualities and talents. We had Karate and Yoga demonstrations, dance and music by the participants. But one personality that really stands out is that of our Magician Vaidhar Shah, who willingly agreed to teach some of us Magic. Now, Magic has become one of my passionate hobbies, thanks to Vaidhar Shah! I was pleasantly surprised to hear that I was voted as “Mr.Santhwana”. I had never really rated myself very high on the popularity chart and this honour has really boosted my self esteem and I thank one and all for the love and consideration shown, A BIG THANK YOU. Apart from learning the fundamentals of psychology, every participant has got insights into one's own personality. I am sure that everyone of us could improve or correct some aspects of behaviour and attitudes making us better students, better spouses, better teachers, better parents, better bosses and better members of the society. The most important lesson I have learned from the course is that I know precious little about how and why people think and behave as they do and there is a lot more to learn about the mind of MAN, the most wonderful creation of God with the most complex computer called the brain. So definitely I am going to continue with the advanced course and I am sure many other participants will also do the same. I look forward to meeting you all in the month of July. I will be extremely happy if this e-mail message of appreciation and thanks can be circulated or forwarded to everyone including all the participants of the course. You may also post it in the Santhwana website if it can be of inspiration to others to join for the course.
